about

the-fold is a research and production project based in London. We sit at the intersection of a variety of disciplines ranging from exploration and practice in interactive aesthetics, event co-ordination, journalism and audio transmission. We borrow liberally from philosophy, fiction, computation and media theory, social and cultural history in an attempt to explore contemporary circumstances beyond a political agenda.

We aim to bootstrap a logic of technological innovation by engaging in media ecologies through abstract and material capacities of intervention. We don’t call for revolutions. Rather, we are interested in the evolution of things – being them ideas, machines or perspectives. Theory is not a set of principles or accounts but a creative pragmatics. To us, its relation to practice is just like a folding act. They renew and recast their relationship in the process.

the-fold was born out of the mutual appreciation of each others strengths. As to say the whole is more than the sum of its parts, the three of us spent many arduous times – pint on hand and hand on heart – discussing continental philosophy and Britney’s latest haircut. It became obvious, at one point, to look for a space of collaboration - initially between ourselves and then to be extended to further interested parties.

We hope this site will grow into a tool for others who share similar interests, an on-line resource and a library of our thoughts and influences. Also we aim to develop the site into a platform for the-fold projects, with regular blog entries for research, events, ideas, reviews and documentation. We hope also in the future to encourage the use of the site by others, inviting them to submit writing and develop the exploration of the issues we will cover.

the-fold is M. Beatrice Fazi, Jonathan Fletcher and Caroline Heron.
